2009 - Silver Anniversary of 49th FS Plaque
Observed at the Air Force Academy
In July, 1984, A plaque was presented, and dedicated to all of those warriors of the 49th Fighter Squadron who gave their lives in defense of liberty. Their heroic sacrifices in World War II will never be forgotten, as is attested to by the sentiments inscribed on the plaque.
In the more than a quarter of a century that has passed since that plaque was placed, we have not for a minute forgotten them or their deeds.
A tradition has grown up around the memorial, as each year a member of our 49th Fighter Squadron Association presents a floral tribute at that place of honor, and collectively, we all remember those who have broken earth's bonds and are now flying with Billy Mitchell.
Many of today's Association members never knew those World War II warriors, but we are, nonetheless, all bound by devotion to country and squadron. We continue to keep faith and shall never forget them.
